Ben’s “Tail”

The Story Behind Ben's Bark Ave. Bistro

Ben started life in 1995 as a pudgy pup in Dover, England. He dreamed of becoming a champion hunting dog one day, like his father. Then one day Ben heard of the fabulous training offered in America. He decided to immigrate to California. Ben trained with the most affluent hunting dogs in the west. His lineage would dictate his success.

A sudden twist of fate changed Ben‘s life. One night he heard the other dogs discussing a unique training facility in the wine country of Napa Valley. This kennel was unlike any other Ben had heard of. This facility trained police K-9’s in drug and explosives odor detection! Ben was fascinated. Ben now had a new dream to fulfill and one that would make his father proud! He signed on to be in the next training class.

Ben worked hard for 10 solid weeks and graduated #1 in his class! He deployed as a drug detection K-9 for the state patrol. Ben’s assignment was to patrol the Interstate. He started his new career on June 1, 1998. On his first day, Ben located 1½ pounds of cocaine in a vehicle! This was the beginning of Ben’s new-found career, a career that would prove to be incredible and satisfying. Ben was now able to help his fellow Americans, by protecting them from these criminals.

A True American K-9 Hero!

Early in 1999, Ben competed in his very first K-9 trial (competition). He won second place out of 22 K-9 teams! By year’s end, Ben had competed in four of the nine state K-9 trials. Even though Ben competed in less than half of the competitions, Ben was crowned the 1999 champion in narcotics detection!

All told, Ben traveled over 200,000 miles in his five year career! (That’s 35 in dog years!) While on patrol Ben located over $27,000,000 in illegal narcotics and over $750,000 in illegal drug money! Not only was Ben the state champion, he’s now also, a true American K-9 hero!

During his career, Ben visited dozens of schools and demonstrated his keen sense of smell for hundreds of school children. Ben’s passion was teaching all of the children the importance of just saying “NO” to drugs.

Ben Turns His Detection Skills in a New Direction

After a fabulous career with the state patrol, Ben elected to retire to a quite life in the foothills. But, he soon grew bored with retirement after such an exciting life of fighting crime. With nothing but his reputation, his handsome face and his "dogged" determination, Ben resarched and identified the very best food products made for dogs and cats. In an effort to educate all pet companions on the proper nutrition for pets, Ben and his companions opened their first "Health Food Store For Dogs & Cats" in 2005, and Ben's Bark Ave. Bistro was born!
